  AFLW signing - Joanne Doonan
Posted by: kruddler - 09-03-2019, 06:49 AM - Forum: Ladies Lounge - Replies (7)

https://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/2019-0...ish-rookie-

Quote:The 25-year-old has enjoyed a decorated Gaelic football career, which has featured two Gaelic Life Club All Star nominations, an All-Ireland Junior Championship, an O’Connor Cup Shield winner where Doonan was awarded player of the match. She has also been a Queen’s University Club Woman of the Year.

Doonan’s athleticism made her a clear standout at the CrossCoders camp in May with her speed, agility and endurance setting her apart.

....

Carlton General Manager of Women’s Football Ash Brown said Doonan has plenty of upside with her athleticism and leadership skills.

“Joanne is a terrific character and she has proven that she is committed and ready to take on the challenge of AFLW,” Brown said.

“Combining her leadership with her elite athleticism, we are really excited about what Joanne will bring to our playing group.

  Herd Immunity
Posted by: LP - 09-03-2019, 03:32 AM - Forum: Blah-Blah Bar - Replies (14)

I've been reading Jacinta Ardern's (NZ Prime Minister) claims of social and fiscal inequality for the outbreaks of measles in NZ. While I have lauded her in the past for some efforts following the Christchurch murders, I'm going to call this one bogus socialist bullshit. Just like here in OZ, immunisation is free in NZ, it is a country with a small population that is very well covered by district nursing services across all groups including the Pakeha, Maori and Moriori communities.

The biggest cause of loss of herd immunity are inner-city left wing anti-vaxers and well-to-do's. The middle class elite who think their status, high mobility and wealth will see them through any crisis, they think their 10th floor penthouse apartment or 3m walled inner city garden can keep them safe. The irony being this group is frequently populated by health professionals and new age influencers, they are highly mobile, so they "spread the cause" fast and free, surrounded by an air of education and even more opportunity, but it seems very little intelligence!

These are people who should know better, but seem to be obsessed with the very low probability risks. They'll cut ties with friends and family rather than get a whooping cough inoculation!

These are the hypocritical people that point at the struggling or down-trodden and say, "It's their fault!"

Ardern should know better, but she can't help return to her privileged roots!

  'junior' Prespakis wins league B+F
Posted by: kruddler - 08-30-2019, 07:41 AM - Forum: Ladies Lounge - Replies (1)

Maddy Prespakis won the rising star, AA selection and best 1st year player in her first season of AFLW.

....and she has a younger sister who is following in her footsteps.

16yo Georgie Prespakis took out the same award her sister did a year earlier - League B+F.

https://womens.afl/news/18230/prespakis-...league-b-f

Unfortunately there is no sister/sister rule so we just have to hope we can somehow wrangle a very early pick in the 2021 draft to team her up with her sister.

A resurrection of an old topic that I rested last year.

There's the most candidates we've had for a long long time. Jones won it two years ago.

  2019 & 2020 Thoughts
Posted by: Baggers - 08-25-2019, 12:39 AM - Forum: Robert Heatley Stand - Replies (33)

2019 Positives & Negatives:
On field:

Players who delivered, consistently: Cripps, E Curnow, Gibson, Jones, Newman, Simpson, Thomas, Walsh (Murphy later in the year).

Biggest disappoint(s) when compared to pre season expectations: Dow, Cuningham (the King Of Cameos), Fisher, Garlett, Pickett, Kennedy, Lang, McGovern (until fitter!!!!), Polson.    Northern Blues.

Surprise packet(s): Newman, Walsh.

DCMs: Garlett, Lang, Macreadie, Polson.

Sign him up for more years, now: Cripps.

We need/get him/them: Gun mid, gun small forward.

Off field:
Most encouraging activity/results: Membership and Member initiatives. Club’s involvement in community. Getting The Terrier to the club and now the Hawthorn psychologist as well. DT appointment.

Biggest disappointment (s): Bolton’s performance and subsequent removal & Board slow to react to BBs removal. Dow and Fisher failing to improve as hoped/expected. Obviously, injuries to key personnel. Judd embarrassing the club with foolish and ill-considered public comments.

We need/get him/her/them: New coach for the Northern Blues, DT gets the assistants he wants. More involvement from past champs… should be regular visitors to the club.

2020

Acceptable minimum wins: 11.

Players MUST: start well and stop periods in games where we concede 4-7 unanswered goals. Profound concentration and on-field leadership and discipline improvement. Cease to be the nice guys of the competition... time for some ruthlessness.

Player(s) who MUST improve: Cuningham, Dow, Fisher, McGovern, McKay’s kicking & thinking, Setterfield.

(crystal ball time) Player(s) who will surprise with their improvement: Deluca, McGovern, Setterfield.

Most looking forward to beating: Richmond and Hawthorn.

(crystal ball again) Our ladder position will be: 8 – 10.

AFL should: Prevent marquee players changing clubs to top 8 clubs. 'Equalization is happening' says Gil… lying pr1ck, I say.

Jim Park Voting: 2019 AFL Rd 23: Carlton vs Geelong
Posted by: crashlander - 08-24-2019, 12:38 AM - Forum: Robert Heatley Stand - Replies (9)

Remember:
[1] At least 3 players need to get a mention.
[2] No more than 10 votes for any one player.
[3] Give a rating of team performance. It can be anywhere from A+ to F.
[4] Votes must add up to 15.

I probably will not be able to vote. I doubt I will see the game in any format.  Sad

  AFLW signing - Katie Harrison
Posted by: kruddler - 08-23-2019, 11:00 PM - Forum: Ladies Lounge - Replies (2)

https://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/2019-0...flw-rookie

Quote:THE CARLTON Football Club is delighted to announce Katie Harrison has signed on as a rookie for the 2020 AFLW season.

Harrison, a development player in the 2017 Australian Rugby Sevens side, follows in the footsteps of fellow converts Chloe Dalton and Brooke Walker who joined the Blues last season and played in the Club’s maiden AFLW Grand Final.

The 26-year-old will make the move from Manly to Melbourne in time for the start of pre-season training.

Harrison is a naturally gifted athlete with elite speed and endurance, which will complement the current playing list at Carlton.

With the success of Dalton and Walker, i think its a smart move to bring in another rugby 7's player.

They are built for the AFLW game with great speed and endurance and an ability (and want) to lay a tackle.
