No vilification in the round ball game
Posted by: DJC - 02-08-2017, 09:44 AM - Forum: The Sports Desk - Replies (1)

I was interested to see that Dean Bouzanis copped the minimum 5 week ban for racial vilification after calling Besart Berisha a "fudging gypsy".

Bouzanis got the minimum because he wasn't aware that calling Berisha a "fudging gypsy" was vilification and because he apologised personally and will undertake appropriate training.

I understand that racial vilification is a big issue in the round ball game but I think the AFL could take a leaf out of the FFA's book when it comes to dealing with vilification.

AFLW Round 2: Carlton vs GWS at Ikon
Posted by: crashlander - 02-08-2017, 04:11 AM - Forum: Ladies Lounge - Replies (33)

This weekend the victorious Blues take on a young and inexperienced GWS side at Princes Park around 1700. Things may do some changing yet, as Collingwood will probably have to move their game from Olympic Park, at that centre simply cannot handle the number of people likely to come to that game. However, whatever they do about timings and the like, the Blues WILL be playing GWS.

Last weekend GWS lost. They showed their relative inexperience, although they do have talent (where have I seen that before?). Our list looks a little more likely, but you can NEVER take anything for granted. Disrepecting your opposition is a certain way to be embarrassed.
I'll publish the teams on Friday.

  ALFW B&F Thread
Posted by: crashlander - 02-04-2017, 11:16 PM - Forum: Ladies Lounge - Replies (92)

Ladies and gentlemen, the moderating team has posed an interesting question that only you, the potential voters, can answer. What was posed was the existence of an ALFW B&F award.

So, we need to answer a lot of questions and suggestions to the moderating team will be gratefully accepted.
[1] Do you want one?
[2] What should it be called?
[3] What should the winner get?
You get the idea.

It was determined that we should have a 3 - 2 - 1 award at this point, until we can determine what may be the best long term solution (assuming the people want to vote at all).
So, I'll start things off. However, please consider the necessities of this award. Even if there is an overwhelming voter response, we still have a lot of work to do before we can get something like the Jim Park.

Round 1: Carlton vs Collingwood:
[3] Brianna Davey
[2] Darcy Vescio
[1] Danielle Hardiman

With apologies to Bianca Jakobsson, Nat Exon, Laura Attard and Lauren Arnell, all of whom deserve a vote.

Mundine - Green, should cheats prosper?
Posted by: LP - 02-04-2017, 01:28 AM - Forum: The Sports Desk - Replies (55)

It's sad reading and listening to the rhetoric today about the recent battle of the prehistoric mammals. It seemed to me to be a sub-standard fight that was akin to two past-it bulls reliving the old days.

But even more disturbing for me is the result, the reason for the result, and the subsequent complaining.

A deliberate cheap shot taken early in the match, well outside the spirit of good sportsmanship, designed to level the playing field. Should not be rewarded with victory. It seems one of the three judges thought so, and despite Mundine finishing the match in better physical condition he should not have been rewarded for what I see as deliberate cheating.

Even sadder, old beaten around the ring boxers coming out and joining the chorus. They discount the bad behaviour and only care about the outcome.

Perhaps Mundine got the physical victory, but it does matter how you get a win! If that isn't the case the next person to fight him should feel free to take a shovel the ring and end him at the first bell!

  AFLW- Round 1 Carlton V Collingwod-Match thread.
Posted by: Lods - 02-02-2017, 09:54 PM - Forum: Ladies Lounge - Replies (97)

Historic match tonight...

Fox Footy and Channel 7, (7mate in Sydney) from 7.30pm

We're just going to kick off with the one thread for pre-match, in-game and post match discussion.
If folks want to expand it in coming weeks and break it up as we do with the men's competition we can accommodate that.

  Dr Who

Fans of the BBC show will be shattered to read Peter Capaldi is leaving his role as The Doctor.

However rumors abound Sir Ian Murray McKellen of Lord of the Rings, X-Men, The Da Vinci Code, Waiting for Godot, etc., etc., is considering a season or two as The Doctor!

Interesting times ahead!

Quote:Lauren Arnell (Carlton)

The club to watch: Carlton
Who will become a household name by the end of the AFLW competition?
Chelsea Randall (Adelaide)
A headline I'd like to see: "The AFLW with an 18-team competition within a minimal number of years"
Who will be a surprise packet? Erin Phillips (Adelaide)
One word to describe AFLW: Fresh
In 20 years, AFLW will be… a fully-fledged competition that will be considered normal practice

Interesting to note that only 3 girls chose their own team as a team to watch. Need more media training??
Everyone else chose the doggies...including the doggies captain Katie Brennan.

  Membership boost from women's team?
Posted by: Mav - 02-01-2017, 10:35 PM - Forum: Ladies Lounge - Replies (11)

Greg Denham said on SEN that Trigg told him last year that females made up only around 27% of our membership.  That was well below the AFL average and Trigg and the club were well aware of this deficit and were working to address it.  Apparently, it's now up to 35%.  I wonder whether this issue was one reason (no doubt one of many) behind our bid for a women's team.  Will the new team drive up female membership?

Trigg will be on KB's show later and presumably this issue will be raised.
