In a lot of ways, this was our worst game for the year. We fumbled. We didn’t handle the conditions well. We were thrashed in the middle. But we didn’t go away. In previous years we would have lost by over 10 goals in similar circumstances.
Votes:
[2] Sam Walsh
[2] Sam Docherty
[2] Charlie Curnow
[2] Tom de Koning
[1.5] Zac Fisher
[1.5] George Hewett
[1] Nick Newman
[1] Adam Cerra
[1] Matthew Kennedy
[0.5] Jesse Motlop
[0.5] Liam Stocker
Explanations:
[2] Sam Walsh: Walsh got a lot of the ball, but he wasn’t at his brilliant best. He fumbled a lot, and his kicking was not as efficient as it normally is. A good game, but not one of his great ones.
[2] Sam Docherty: Continued to get a lot of the ball, but simply wasn’t as effective as he has been for most of the season.
[2] Charlie Curnow: If we could have got the ball near Charlie a few more times, he would have kicked 10 goals. He was a total winner who thrashed his opponent at every contest. We just couldn’t get it to him enough.
[2] Tom de Koning: When Tom was being beaten, we lost the game. But he responded and really lifted. Pity he can’t get the ball to our mids like Pitto did early in the season. His goal was one to remember.
[1.5] Zac Fisher: A lot of the ball and he was reasonable effective. A very solid game from Fisher.
[1.5] George Hewett: 26 possessions, 5 clearances and 4 tackles suggests he had a reasonable night’s work. Just not as effective as he has been.
[1] Nick Newman: Newman did a pretty good job, everything considered, but even he fumbled marks he has been taking of late.
[1] Adam Cerra: Didn’t have the visibility that he can have, but still had 23 possessions, 5 clearances and 4 tackles.
[1] Matthew Kennedy: Started very well. Was our best player early, but he dropped as the game went on. 22 possessions, 2 clearances and 6 tackles.
[0.5] Jesse Motlop: Really good signs for the future. He did the negative things well, had 5 tackles and was involved in most of our scores. Got a bit cold later in the game because the ball didn’t get near him.
[0.5] Liam Stocker: Not a stunning game, but a solid one. Beat his opponents but dropped a few marks he should have taken.
Honourable Mentions:
Adam Saad: Saad didn’t have a big night, but he wasn’t bad either. Geelong managed to keep him away from the ball, but he didn’t give his opponents a sniff.
Jack Silvagni: Tried hard and did some good things but was slaughtered in the ruck.
Will Hayes: Hayes got a fair bit of the ball, but things didn’t work for him. He turned the ball over too often and simply didn’t make the choices he needed to. Getting suspended for a tackle was the icing on the cake.
Lachie Plowman: Not a big game from Plowman, but he did his job. His opponents didn’t contribute much.
Live Long and Prosper!
