Not really, a rather small segment of our population want to paint a large segment of Australia as prejudice like "Middle America". But that is because the only reference being used  American social media dominated by Youtube, InstaTwaddle and FacePlant channels, which spend all day raging about sovereignty and being shot dead by the police!

If we ever become a republic, we shouldn’t have a president as the head of state.  The prime minister can do the job while remaining accountable to parliament.

Or as John Laws used to say, "when youre on a good thing, stick to it". I have travelled a lot and have friends and relos in many coutries and we are truly blessed (bar the odd f-wit here and there). We aint broken (by comparison), just leave it alone.

I can understand some don’t want Betty or Charlie et al as our head of state and as Australia becomes less a child of Britain I’m starting to lean toward an Australian head of state
As you point out G2C, effectively our system isn’t broken, we could have a HOS elected by 2/3 majority of both houses.
Popular vote..? PASS.

In fairness McGuire probably wouldn't be too bad, relative to Trump, perhaps our Trump version would be to elect Sam Newman or Sam Kekovich? ;D
