Marta is currently regarded as best ever, and Mia Hamm from America is another vying for that title.

Sam Kerr is 23, let's have the debate in 10 years!

Two goals tonight against China.

The first one she beat three taller opponents for a header, the 2nd a remarkable long range bomb.

Best in t he world presently.

Did not even make the shortlist for the top 3 in the FIFA Women's player of the year this year (should have).
Instead a non-pro college student was one of the 3 shortlisted (Deyna Castellanos), Castellanos can play btw.
How Sam Kerr didn't make the top 3 thought.... It seems outrageous.

Quote:Sky Blue FC, 2015–[edit]
In 2015, Kerr joined Matildas teammate Caitlin Foord at Sky Blue FC following their participation at the FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada.[22][23] Kerr's six goals in her nine appearances ranked first on the team.[4]

During the 2016 season, Kerr made nine appearances for Sky Blue after being away with the national team in preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympics. She scored five goals during the regular season.[4] Kerr was named NWSL Player of the week for Week 18 after scoring two goals: an 80th minute equaliser against the Orlando Pride and a game-winning goal against the Pride a few days later.[24]

In the 2017 season, Kerr set a new NWSL record when she scored 4 goals in a single game after being down 3-0 to Seattle Reign at halftime. Sky Blue eventually won the match 5-4. At the age of 23, Kerr sat atop the all-time NWSL goalscoring table. Kerr won the NWSL Golden Boot and MVP award after finishing the 2017 season with a record-breaking 17 goals.

Go figure.....

Its probably to do with weighting for the competition combined with timing of the body of work required to win a competition.

i.e. Sam may have scored most of her goals after the cut off for that season.

If the competition is important, the W league isnt helping her.

IF the timing is off, she will come into the frame for the next title up for grabs.

The public gets in say in the winner ffs.

Looking at the names of the clubs these girls represent, there is no secret as to why she didnt win.

Combine that with a voting public likely to be US based and there is your answer.
