There has been a bit of fuss on social media in the last week or two about QLD sprinting sensation Gout Gout.
It's a bit surprising because the clips of Gout doing the rounds are from back in March..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8IuQc-QVhE

I guess a bit of the interest is the fact that the World U/20 championships are on at the moment in Peru.
Gout is still only around 16.
Well about an hour or two ago Gout completely missed the start of the 200 metre final and was well down going into the bend.
He's come over the top of all the others, just failing to catch the 100 meter champion Walaza who was an Olympic relay medallist with the South African team a few weeks ago.

If you get a chance to have a look at it...this kid looks like being something special at the next Olympics and probably at his peak in Brisbane.

(Here it is)

and...just when you thought it was safe to leave the track...

Olympian Torrie Lewis has also won a silver in the Women's 200m
I am an academic at the University of South Australia (my details are included at the beginning of the survey) and I am conducting some research on the game day experiences of sports fans in Australia. I would really appreciate a few minutes of your time to complete an anonymous and confidential survey I have compiled:

As a basketball tragic, I haven’t really given this as much attention as I should have.

First of all, congratulations are due to Joe Ingles, Patty Mills and Lauren Jackson for winning selection to their fifth Olympics. Loz’s selection is particularly admirable given that her last Olympics was London in 2012, she retired with a debilitating knee injury and is now 43 years young. Her form in the recent series against China suggests that she’ll get more than her share of court time in Paris.

Joe and Patty have had stellar careers but both will probably spend more time on the bench than on the court in Paris. Joe’s probably in better touch but Patty will still have his moments.

I think that the two most significant omissions from the Boomers are Chris Goulding and Matisse Thybulle. Goulding, by his own admission, was always going to struggle against the younger talent.

Thybulle’s defensive efforts at the last Olympics were outstanding but it seems that Brian Goorjian is after more offensive firepower than hard nosed defence. Goorjian is a wily operator and I’m sure that he knows what he’s doing.

To bring that D-Grade fixed result rubbish to Melbourne is kicking sand in the face of the whole state, origin should be banned, blocked at the border like Fruit Fly's. A complete waste of time for viewers and 90,000 spectators.

It was possibly the most staged disingenuous exhibition of professional sport I've ever seen, reminiscent of The Harlem Globe Trotters playing a clown team!

Sam Kerr has been charged with the racially aggravated harassment of a police officer and will go to trial in February 2025. What’s that about “justice delayed is justice denied”?

Of course, Sam is innocent until proven guilty and we shouldn’t anticipate the outcome of the trial. However, I suspect that we won’t see any more FIFA puff pieces about Sam’s ethnicity:

“[Sam’s] journey speaks volumes about the evolving landscape of football and the power of athletes to transcend borders, languages, and cultures. As she continues to excel on the pitch, she also strives to be a beacon of hope for young Indian girls who dare to dream beyond conventions.”

I was listening to the news on the radio this morning and heard a story that former Australian swimmer James Magnussen is returning to swimming in the ‘Enhanced games’

https://www.news.com.au/sport/olympics/a...4aec2996c6

Basically, it is an anything goes competition.
Drugs, Supersuits….whatever aid you can get.
Big prizemoney for breaking world bests.
I checked the date.
It’s not April 1st.
My first reaction was WTF. Stupid idiots.

But then I had a think about it.
Was Lance Armstrong the only cyclist using performance enhancers? Of course, he wasn’t and many of those who finished close behind him were probably similarly doped up. Yet his name is ‘shame’ and others not so much.
I had a look at a ‘shame’ file of track and field athletes who were denied records because of doping infringements. The thing that struck me was that list contained a number of athletes who still hold ‘legitimate’ world records. So, they were caught on some occasions, got away with it on others.
Marita Koch (400 metres) Jarmila Kratochvilova ( 800 metres) hold records that date back to the 1980’s. Both athletes were part of Eastern European regimes where doping was well documented. Florence Griffith Joyner set records that women are still not within ‘cooee’ of achieving.
Some of the men’s throwing records also date back over 40 years
So the whole world record thing in many sports is a farce and not worth a pinch of salt.

The reality is the only true measure of ultimate human ‘achievement’ that can be taken as reliable is, very sadly , the records set by the druggies.

1 Malcolm Marshall (West Indies 81 Tests. 376 wickets at 20.94)
2 Wasim Akram (Pakistan. 104 Tests. 414 wickets at 23.62)
3 Dennis Lillee (Australia 70 Tests. 355 wickets at 23.92)
4 Glenn McGrath (Australia. 124 Tests. 563 wickets at 21.64)
5 Curtly Ambrose (West Indies. 98 Tests. 405 wickets at 20.99)
6 Dale Steyn (South Africa. 93 Tests. 439 wickets at 22.95)
7 Richard Hadlee (New Zealand. 86 Tests. 431 wickets at 22.29)
8 Waqar Younis (Pakistan. 87 Tests. 373 wickets at 23.56)
9 Imran Khan (Pakistan. 88 Tests. 362 wickets at 22.81)
10 Fred Trueman (England. 67 Tests. 307 wickets at 21.57)

I realise these lists are generational and personal, you can really only judge those you have seen, but I think there are a couple of potential omissions. Andy Roberts, Bob Willis, Kapil Dev, Joel Garner, James Anderson to name a few, on the above list I would probably have Hadlee and Khan higher in the list.

Fred Trueman I wouldn't rate above Willis, and having talked to some past test players many would rate John Snow ahead of them all but to be a great you also need longevity I suppose. But the title says best, and best is subjective.

Can't see how Marshall gets in ahead of Roberts or Garner, to me Roberts is the clear leader.

Khan in my eyes was better than Akram and Younis, maybe he gets a kicking for being a politician.

Kapil Dev is mighty unlucky not to be on the list, especially given he spent a career bowling on pitches that were doctored for spinners.

I'd probably have Roberts and Lillee the Top 2 slots in any order, the rest is a coin toss.
