Keeping it simple must be the key to good coaching. Out there in the heat of battle at AFL level, trying to remember too many instructions is probably futile with opposition pressure often at very intense levels. Thinking time would be minimal and often instincts take over, as they do in real battles.
Simple instructions without too many options or need to think too deeply would be the most effective for all but the most gifted players.
