Yes, in race they were all able to close the margin on the McLarens, they just couldn't sustain it due to tyre degradation.

Excluding Sargeant and Ocon who tried for Fastest Lap late, the other times were after the last pit stop. McLaren had Mercedes, Ferrari and RB ahead of them, despite those cars being back in the traffic and McLaren up at the pointy end.

In qualifying McLaren used drafting to boost lap times, it was part of the pre-race discussions about whether drafting should be allowed.
