Playing midfield we used to come on for about 6 minutes then come off. A long run at training during the wet was 4 km - I'd come back to Melbourne and peel off 16 km in the dry heat. I used to lose about 3 kg playing.
Once you heat up, you just can't cool down, it's nuts. My eyes used to get all scabby and caked up from the sweat, that was the worst part, you'd hit the showers and your eyes would be burning from the salt. It was hard yakka.
