Agree that R&R had it's popular birth with the Beatles. If you wanted to be pedantic you could argue that R&R had it's roots in R&B/Soul dating back to the 40s which many artists of the 50s and 60s say was their greatest influence (eg Elvis/Bill Haley/Chuck Berry/Buddy Holly).

Baggers I like the R&B and "Jump" music of the 1940s, what I think was the precursor to R&R, particularly Big Joe TurnerĀ and to a degree Louis Jordan, followed on by Howlin' Wolf. I was fortunate to have discovered them early in my teenage years and have listened to this stuff on and off ever since.
