I work public sector health.
I can attest that calling in sick is unreasonably strict, even for admin officers.
I heard a stat that people coming to work whilst sick actually cost more for the business in the long term than they do just by taking their allotted sick leave.
The shame in it, is that they ask far too many questions surrounding it, and then even put action plans into place to try and understand why you are taking sick leave (being sick isnt a valid excuse apparently).
The real shame in it, is that some people who get the treatment surrounding sick leave actually have a reason behind it, and it can be family illness (think the Big C) and they still get unreasonably questioned surrounding sick leave or carers leave.
Others who take one sick day in a blue moon are believed to be pulling a sickie.
Its a load of crap, and the onus is on the manager to explain his sick leave and state of play, not on the staff member to "get well".
