Tau is probably the best one i've come across on Netflix, but again, better ones on Stan.
I'd try and track down Ex Machina if you haven't seen that one. Not sure what platform its on at the moment. EDIT: Its on Stan
I've also watched I Am Mother and Circle. Nothing like 2001 level, but again, Netflix is lacking in that area IMO.

Lately we've also used Apple+, often you can view of a movie quiet cheaply without having a subscription, just $3-$5 which is a cheap night's entertainment.
It pays not to be loyal to these services, there is generally no penalty to start and stop a subscription, when they have nothing for you to watch suspend it.

After the brilliant Interstellar I was excited to watch Ad Astra but sadly like the vaccine it was a complete flop.

Interstellar might be the best film I've seen made in years from a science fiction perspective.
Ive seen a few that are cheesy flops. Ad astra wasn't so bad, it could have been great but it was very ordinary, but I did like the concepts it touched on. I thought it touched on some really deep concepts at a shallow level.
The Martian was cool.
I also liked a movie with the bloke from avatar about colonising Neptune and how we experiment with DNA.

It's worth it, binge what you can and cancel it.
Do that over the various platforms and you'll find 100s of new movies that cost you nothing.
I like almost all types of movies and go through stages of what I'll watch. In terms of sci-fi, I tend to stay away from the big budget stuff as it's usually dumbed down and incorrect in terms of its science, but there are exceptions.
Mostly I enjoy little Indie Scifi flicks....a lot of them do have a horror/killing edge to them, but I always have an eye to horror so that suits.
A favourite niche genre is 'enclosed room(s)' films. Circle which I mentioned before is one. Cube is a classic and it's 2 sequels are ok too. There was one called Tangent which was pretty interesting, on disney+ I think, or Amazon prime. Exam is another one, but less Sci fi. Fermat's room...the list goes on.
Anyway, see how you go.

Watching "Sleepers" on SBS OD at the moment. Worthwhile imo, if you don't mind subtitles. Set in Czechoslovakia during the Cold War.
Reality always wins in the end.
