Indeed. We don't have a lot of picks: we did a fair bit of trading. But the draft is important.

MIMI HILL
Pos Midfielder
Ht 165cm, DOB 4/10/02
From Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro
A two-year skipper of Oakleigh, Hill was a member of the NAB AFLW Academy this year. She's strong in the contest and is a proven ball-winner. She's especially handy at setting up forward 50 entries with her sharp kicking. Hill reads the play well, anticipating where best to set herself to have an impact on the contest.

We seem to have a serious midfield bent this recruiting period, yet I would not have thought that is our weakness.

I must admit I was expecting us to consider a young ruck. Alison Downie is 36 and not getting any younger. Moody has years left in her. But these arw the only really ruck-tall players we have.
I have noted that we've gone for pace. It was a hallmark of our side last year. We appear to be following that trend.

I suppose the AFLW game style is different from what we know and love and so it should be, so I suspect team structures and trends will be quite different in the long term.
As the AFLW evolves we will see a clearer trend.

Will be interesting to see how the AFLW evolves.
Purely based on the how fledgling the game is, yesterdays heroes will come back to the field quickly as the youngsters evolve and get, bigger, stronger, faster.
Experience is king, but they play so few games per season, that the newbies will catch up quickly.
A tactic to rejuvinate the midfield every year is probably a good one. The older players can crack in, the youngsters can hit the outside and do the damage. A lot of the womens games are rolling mauls due to inability to clear the contests with a long kick or handpass because the range isnt there in the kicking at this stage too, so its not a bad tactic to try and run and carry.
