Post Game Passion: AFL 2020 Rd 4: Carlton vs. the Drug Cheats
(06-29-2020, 09:46 AM)DJC link Wrote:I was just watching the Simmo highlights on the club website and it featured his tackle on Zaharakis in the last quarter.  I guess a ball up is a reasonable result for a very good tackle but what about the Essendon bloke that tackles Simmo.  Zaharakis still has the ball so surely that is a free kick to Simmo  :Smile
I've always been critical of this tactic (most clubs do it) where a 3rd player comes in and 'tackles' the tackler. I agree that this act should be penalised.

How ? careless. CFC must take a stand on this.

Really. wow.

Poor fella. Will be alright though?
Finals, then 4 in a row!

Sometimes you just have to take things in your own hands and make the opposition understand you won't put up with cheap snipes and Merrett needed a lesson during the game so he didn't apply that type of tackle again..

I'll never forget that game and moment.

Carrots had been in exceptional form, like best in comp form....

The take out was orchestrated imo.

I thought Lonergan was a gutsy little player up until that moment - hated him ever since.
Reality always wins in the end.

'Sliding doors' moment'
A tackle that changed the course of history.
There's a chance Brett Ratten would still be our coach if not for that tackle. Wink

We'd started the season like a house on fire.
Beaten Richmond and Brisbane and demolished Collingwood.
Carrazzo had been arguably our best player.

Ratten got a 'bee in his bonnet' about the size and strength of the Bombers (little did we know) that led to a falling out with  Justin Cordy.

Carrazzo's injury was one of the first in a string that would seriously weaken the side to the extent they were a shadow of the Round1-3 side by the end of the year and Ratten was history.

Not just Ratten.

I still feel guilty to this day for giving Adrian Gleeson a gob full of vitriolic Men vs Boys crap as he left "The G" that very evening, I think he was Director of Football at the time! Later I heard that he had allegedly unloaded on the players and coaching staff in the rooms after the game at what he thought was an unacceptable effort, so perhaps he shared my mindset. I'm lucky he didn't break my nose in the Carpark!

But what else could we think, nobody had come across the CheatsFC level of Cheating before?

Interesting to see SoJ telling the media he wanted to go back on but was over-ruled by the club doctors.

It's probably just a sign of the way the world is going to change long term after this COVID-19 situation.

Previously it was risking further damage and a longer hospital stay, but there are now very very good reasons to minimise hospital visits, and especially a visit with potential lung damage. So I suspect across the board we'll see club medicos being far more cautious in making these decisions.

I simply don't buy the bravado from SOJ, but understand it's good, politically.

Players say these kinds of things to 'look after' opponents and attempt to minimise their injury to help the other bloke and stay in the team. Unlike we supporters who don't have to keep up appearances... Merrett's strike deserved more than a week, and he's a pr1ck.
