Welcome one and all to Jim Park Analysis 2020.
Yes, it is that time of year again, where the season beckons and hope fills our hearts (well, it did until a couple of weeks ago, but that is another tale).
Last year we had a win by Patrick Cripps. This year, who will it be?
Cripps remains the favourite. He is that good.
Sam Walsh appears to be the danger, as his brilliant 1st year form shows no sign of slowing.
Docherty is back. But is he back to his best?
Eddie Betts is back. GOOOAAALL!

Voting will continue as it has been for the last few years.
There are 15 votes available, to split as you choose, more or less.
No player is allowed to have more than 10 votes per game.
At least 3 players deserve a mention each week, even in the worst of losses.
Each game requires a rating, from F to A+. The rating determines the weighting of the game. This is usually important, as more players deserve a mention in a good game compared to that in a poor showing.

Carlton vs Richmond Rd 1:   

We couldn't do it. Again. An insipid first half, but some decent footy thereafter.

I'm not sure how many more times I'll be doing this for 2020, but here is what we thought:
Trends:
[1] Rating: 7.51. This represents a score between a D+ and C-. Considering how we played early, this is a reasonable score.
[2] 9 Players deserved a vote. That suggests I didn't do a thorough enough job, but ... Seriously, 9 players suggests that not enough was done by too many of our players. When we get 13 or 14 guys getting a mention we usually win.
[3] 13 people voted in this round, also a little lower than I'd hoped. However, considering that we lost and that nobody could see the game in person, it is a reasonable turnout. Hopefully we can actually win a game or two this year and bring the voters out.
[4] 5 players managed 100 votes or more. This shows that we did have a significant number of the better players on the ground. In our worst losses it can be as few as 1 or 2.
[5] Jack Martin's score was an excellent one for his debut, beaten only by Cripps and Weitering.
[6] We suffered 3 serious injuries in this game. However, it looks like they won't be missing much football. But that is just because the season is so screwed up.

Not a surprise that Cripps topped the voting. Weitering's effort keeping his man goalless was excellent, as was Martin's effort up forward. Doc and Levi were giants, considering.
That Fisher got a vote suggests he was pretty decent, considering he was injured badly.

If, as we fear, this is the last game for 2020, then Cripps has won another Jim Park Award. Amazing!

I am taking something of a risk writing this before I lock the thread, but I don't expect many more voters. If there are some, I'll update the numbers as necessary.

Carlton vs Melbourne: we fail by a single point after a multi-week break due to Covid-19.
Our first quarter was totally fecal. The rest wasn't bad, except for our kicking at goal.

Trends:
[1] Marc Pittonet got his first senior game for us. he was thrashed early, but came back really well. We managed to get 2nd rating, a remarkable effort in the situation.
[2] 13 players managed to get a vote this week. This is the sort of result that is common when we win. This suggests that we probably deserved the win. Pity we couldn't manage it.
Last game only 9 people managed a vote, so this effort is an improvement. All the same, we need more from more players.
[3] We had 3 players get 100 or more votes. This is not as good as the previous round. Weitering again dominated his position and got top votes.
[4] 17 people voted in this round. That is an excellent effort. This compares to 9 in Round 1. If we start playing a bit better, more people will want to vote.
[5] A rating of 7.27 is slightly lower than last time. I guess it shows that we don't rate Melbourne. 7.27 represents a D+.
[6] We managed to get through this week with only 1 serious injury. Unfortunately, the one we got was a shocker and it happened early. We will miss Newman. He is gone for the season.
[7] Patrick Cripps was 8th highest this week, his lowest rating in a long time. Even so, he could have won us the game if he didn't hit the post.

Rd 3: Carlton defeats Geelong at Geelong.
At last!
The next task is to play 4 quarters. It must be possible.

Trends:
[1] This is one of the evenest performances we’d had for a long time. 4 players managed more than 200 votes. 13 different players deserved a mention. That is the sort of thing I like to see.

[2] With a rating of 9.53 (which represents halfway between an A- and B+), this was recognized as one of our better efforts in recent years.
But, how different would it have been if Geelong had kicked straight in the last quarter? Come to that, if we’d kicked the goals in the last quarter, as we did have chances.

[3] 17 people voted again this week, the same as last week. This round last year had only 12 voters.

[4] Pittonet has impressed so far. He is ranked 2nd in the ruck stats at the moment. I don’t think that will last: there are some pretty good rucks out there, but it is a very positive sign. His aggression and commitment have been excellent.

[5] We managed to get through the game without a serious injury. That is very positive, as we have the tendency to have a lot of injuries.

[6] It was really nice beating Geelong at Geelong, something we haven’t done for quite a while. Granted that we haven’t played many games in Geelong either, but that is another issue.

Rd 4: Carlton vs the Drug Cheats at the MCG
We got over the line, but really should have won by considerably more.

Trends:
[1] 18 voters again this week, a good, solid turnout. This time last year we had only 12. Last week we had 17.
[2] We couldn’t emulate last week’s even performance, but we did have 2 guys get over 300 votes, which is also a pretty solid outing. We also had 17 players get a mention. That is huge. A cannot remember another game with 17 players deserving a vote!
[3] A Rating of 9.2 is a little lower than last week’s, but it is still a very credible B+. If we could produce that every week, I would be happy!
[4] Marc Pittonet’s vote was down this week, which was disappointing after his first couple. However, he continued to be an important factor in our midfield effort. Murphy continues to get a mention but is only attracting relatively low numbers each week. He may not be a 4-quarter player any longer but is making an impact at good times. Similarly, Mitch McGovern: his intent seems there, but he is just not getting the ball enough to be the contributor we need him to be.
[5] We managed to get through a game without damaging our list in the process. However, we have 4 or more players unavailable for the season, all of whom could be useful.
[6] It was very close at the top this round, with a mere 5 votes separating the top 2 place getters. Especially so when Cripps was not one of our top votes getters.

Rd 5: Carlton vs St. Kilda
Alas, the result was not what we wanted. You could honestly say that we didn't have a 4 quarter player on the night. And we still managed to get close!

Trends:
[1] 13 voters this week, down from 18 the previous week. Not too bad for a loss. We managed 14 voters this round last year.
[2] With a rating of 6.74, this was the worst rating we’ve had all season. This represents a D-. It is probably a reasonable measure of how we played, but we still managed to get within a few goals in the end. Clearly, we are marking harder as our expectations are higher.
[3] Although quite a few players got mentions this week, there was nothing of the evenness we’ve had recently. One player, Jack Martin, dominated the scoring, even though his first half was significantly better than his second. That suggests the majority of the voters were not satisfied by the drop in effectiveness of the team.
Setters also played a mediocre game but managed to garner a lot of votes for similar reasons: he had at least a short period of dominance and was considered to have done his job.
[4] Liam Jones polarized the voters this week. He got none from a number of voters for the bad mistakes which gifted the ‘Aints two goals. Other recognized that he was the most effective defender on the field with 11 marks and the total domination of his opponent.
[5] We did manage to get through the game relatively injury free. That is a big positive.
[6] 13 players managed to get a mention this week. This is normally the sign that we have played well. But that is not the case this week. It is more than a lot of players had small periods of good play.
[7] Unfortunately some players who have been very good for us failed to make a significant impression. Pittonet was down for the first time, Cunners followed up his best game with an invisible one, while Cripps and Docherty were below their best.

Jack Martin was 200 votes in front of his nearest rival for top spot, which was Liam Jones. Jones just managed to get in front of Setters.

Rd 6: Carlton vs the Western Bulldogs
The Blues played well and muzzled the Dogs.

Trends:
[1] For the first time I can recall, every player except two got a mention. They were Marc Murphy, who wasn’t that bad, and co-Captain Sam Docherty, who beat his man. 20 out of 22! Amazing!
Basically, this was one of the most even team performances we’ve produced. There was no single dominant figure, no Judd-like 400+ vote performance. I was so pleased to see such an even spread of effort.
[2] There were 17 voters this week. I thought we might have managed a couple more, but 17 is pretty good, considering that only a couple of Qld Blues saw the game live and that we were on Fox.
How many would have voted if there were 50 000 at the MCG? Only Covid-19 knows.
This round last year attract 16 voters.
[3] The rating this week was 10.06, which represents an A. This is also much larger than anytime in recent memory. Now to reproduce that!
[4] We did have some injuries in this round: Cripps and Murphy being the most significant. Cripps was down for most of the day and appeared to be carrying something.
[5] For the second time this season Jack Martin led the vote count, with a very respectable 275. Ed Curnow came in just behind on 260. 5 players managed 100 or more.
[6] We managed our biggest winning margin since 2014 with Cripps down. That says a lot.

Yes, we have a new leader! Jack Martin has overtaken Jacob Weitering for the lead. Weitering is still getting votes, just not as many as he managed earlier in the year. Docherty and Cripps are falling behind while Pittonet continues his strong run.

Rd 7: Carlton vs Port Adelaide and we get beaten after the siren. That hurt.
Trends:
[1] The trend of this year continues: we have very few dominating players and a lot of contributors. We had 16 players deserve a mention. Usually that is enough to win, but we failed at the last hurdle.
[2] Only 12 people voted this week, down from 17 last week. I guess that happens with a loss.
[3] Our rating this week was 8.31, which represents a C+. Most people voted in the C – B range, except for one, ElwoodBlues1, who thought we were rubbish (E). I wonder how we would have voted if that last kick had missed? We were really close!
[4] 5 players managed more than 100 votes this week. Not surprising, as we were the better team on the day.
[5] Sam Walsh had his first BOG for the season with 313 votes. Next was Weitering with 177.

Weitering has reclaimed the lead this week, as Jack Martin missed the kicks that would have kept him on top.
It is very close between 3rd and 5th.

Round 8: Carlton vs North Melbourne
It was disappointing that we couldn’t ‘put North away’, but a win like that showed how much we have improved.

Trends:
[1] Another week with 16 guys getting votes. That tells me that, while nobody is dominating, the team is working. We rarely lose when we get such an even contribution.
[2] 17 people voted this week, compared to 12 last week. This round last year we had 16 voters. Considering how poorly we played against Hawthorn, it worries me that we will get very few voters.
[3] The rating this week was 8.69, which is decent. That represents a B- overall. We also didn’t really have the sort of outliers this week that we had last week.
[4] 6 players managed 100 votes or more. I don’t think we’ve been this even since I have been doing this.
[5] Will Setterfield managed his first BOG of the year. This was his third top 3 finish. Hopefully it is a sign of things to come.
Ed Curnow remains in our top 10 from every game we’ve played this year. This is a great effort.
On the other hand, it was Gibbo’s first time out of the top 10.
[6] Setters managed 238 votes, just ahead of Matthew Kennedy’s 222.

Weitering has managed to consolidate his lead to 200 votes. The race for third place is wide open with 3 players in the 700's and another two in the 600's.

Rd 9: Carlton vs Hawthorn
We produce our worst effort for the year after a very good start. It was bitterly disappointing to be beaten as we were.

Trends:
[1] We had 10 voters for this game, down from around 17. While 10 is very low, this time last year we had just 6 people who voted. Must be something about this round making us play poorly.
[2] As we have a low rating and not many voters, we had the lowest number of votes for the year, and by a considerable margin.
[3] Only 10 players managed a mention this week, considering that we didn’t have a poor player in the first quarter. It shows how totally we dropped out of the game. A lot of players barely managed to touch the ball after quarter time.
[4] This week there were a couple of standout performances, unlike the evenness of recent times. Three players managed more than 100 votes only.
[5] The rating this week was 6.17, by far the lowest of the year. That represents halfway between and E [/color}and an [color=red]E+.
[6] Weitering managed his 2nd BOG for the year. Casboult hasn’t made it to BOG yet, but this was his 4th top five finish. Patrick Cripps was back in the top 3 after a very lean spell.
[7] At least we didn’t have to worry about contentious umpiring this week. We were so ordinary that it made no difference.
