Schumacher for one. Vettel at his peak was. Hamilton certainly was early on. He got sick of booing and started sucking up everyones butt and has turned that image around somewhat. Do you want to go back to blokes like Hunt Even Prost, Senna, Lauda, Mansell all exuded arrogance and got called pricks on more than one occasion. In formula 1, perhaps like no other sport, you need so much going right for you in terms of sponsorship, simply to get close to F1 level. If you are not arrogant, you don't get close. Re: Formula 1 - kruddler - 07-22-2024 re Seb and his 'refusal' to give the place back to Webber "Multi 21 Seb!" They touched on it during the race (or in the recap afterwards) that Sebs refusal actually endeared himself to the team. "This one has what it takes!" In the world of F1, nice guys finish last. You need plenty of c**t about you. You reckon if Norris falls with 7 points of the world championship he won't be reminding everyone of how he gave away 7 points for the team in Hungary. Truth be told though, if it was any other team, they wouldn't have been so insistent on handing back that place. McLaren, going back to the Hakkinen/Coulthard glory years were always 'equals' in the car when everyone else had team orders. Schumacher got many a point from Barrichello rolling over when told too. Hamiton got the same from Bottas when required. Stick a pin in this one and revisit it at the end of the season. Re: Formula 1 - LP - 07-22-2024 McLaren have a great platform for tyre management, they had a distinct advantage but even in last night's race RB, Mercedes and Ferrari all had superior ultimate pace but lost the tyres too quickly. Max was crying Wolf, and he was stupid doing what he did, he should cop a penalty next start, but over the next couple of months he gets to race on tracks almost engineered to suit his RB20. So....like qualifying where McLaren were also 1+2 ? F1 is a marathon not a sprint. Tyre management is part of the game. A team and its 'pace' cannot be separated without taking tyre management into account in some manner. McLaren are clearly the best car at the moment. Verstappen is the best driver. Sometimes the driver can outdo the car. Last night, it couldn't. Excluding Sargeant and Ocon who tried for Fastest Lap late, the other times were after the last pit stop. McLaren had Mercedes, Ferrari and RB ahead of them, despite those cars being back in the traffic and McLaren up at the pointy end. In qualifying McLaren used drafting to boost lap times, it was part of the pre-race discussions about whether drafting should be allowed. Don't put the cart before the horse LP. McLaren didn't need to 'go faster' to satisfy your need for pace. Other teams needed to go hell for leather at certain stages. The faster they go, the more the tyres wear. Thats how the system worked. As is evident in qualifying. When McLaren need to go fast, they can do it. Facts are when they need to go fast (qualifying) they were the fastest cars. Spin it any way you want. Lando never needed that fastest lap point, what if he misses the championship by 1pt, I bet he'll regret that? ;D Re: Formula 1 - LP - 09-17-2024 Much of the F1 establishment, at least the bit we see dominated by the Sky race crew (Nearly all of them Brits), are throwing their weight behind Lando Norris after Piastri's second win. Comments like, "this doesn't mean anything for team tactics" or "Lando is still the No.1". For those not following, Lando is a bit of a chosen one in Brit land. Reality is Piastri has looked a class above from the day he started, back when his arrival clearly signalled the demise of Ricciardo, at least to me. Piastri is cooler behind the wheel, doesn't break the machine, is technically excellent, smooth as silk, gets the job done with minimal fuss or bluster, does the right thing, behaves predictably, seems relentless, and appears to be marketable. These are not small scalps Piastri is claiming, he is making some old heads look like rookies. It comes with a bit of push back. I can't wait to see what Jack Doohan is capable of, he is a racer type like his old man. |
