Rd 11: Carlton vs West Coast
I thought I missed something, but then I realized we had a bye!
This was a game of what might have been. The clamour over free kicks has never been louder and we were certainly on the receiving end of some shockers.
Trends:
[1] We had 12 voters this week, up from 10 against Hawthorn and 14 for the same round last year. It is normal now to have approximately one third of the voting population silent after a loss. Nichevo.
[2] Even though we lost, the voters considered our game better than for some of our victories. There were over 300 more votes than for last week.
[3] This week 14 players managed a mention, a considerable improvement over last week when only 10 players saluted. One of the trends of the year has been the evenness of our performance. However, you can also say that fewer of our players than ever before have grabbed games by the scruff of the neck.
[4] This week 5 players managed more than 100 votes each. This is a considerable improvement over last week as well.
[5] The rating this week was 8.14, a considerable improvement over last week and equating to a little over a C. There was still quite a large discrepancy in the ratings, from a B to an E.
When you get down to it, many of our voters have very different views to others.
[6] If we had to rate the Umpiring this week, we just might have managed record lows! The simple fact of this year is that very few people are happy with the umpiring. Whatever the AFL may decide in future, I doubt they can fix the present mess without a lot of work.
[7] After having so few spectators all year, it must have been fairly daunting over in Perth with a very loud, very negative Weagles crowd. Much Kudos to the supporters of the Blues who turned up.
[8] Liam Jones managed his first BOG of the season with 285 votes. This was Jones’ 6th result inside the top 10. Close behind was Zac Fisher with 231 and 4 goals.

Weitering extended his lead, but not by much. With Jack Martin off early, he didn't have the opportunity to do much. It is actually pretyy tight in the pack that follows, although Cripps is on the improve.

Round 12: Carlton vs Fremantle in Perth
What a win! Jack Newnes has made a name for himself and will forever be remembered, even though he played on his worst games on the day.
It was nice to break someone else’s heart, instead of having ours broken.
Trends:
[1] 17 peopled voted for this game, well up on last week and 1 more than for the same round last year. Nothing like a win to get the voters putting their 2 cents worth in!
[2] Even though we won, there were only 100 more votes cast compared to last week. I guess most of us were unimpressed by our 1st quarter. I know I was.
[3] 15 players deserved a mention this week, only 1 more than last week. Fair enough, as we did put in against the Weagles.
[4] Unlike most weeks this season, we had 3 players dominate the voting this week. They all managed well over 200 votes each. Nobody got between 100 and 200 votes this round. Those three players were Sam Walsh, Patrick Cripps and Ed Curnow.
[5] the rating this week was 8.83, a very solid score. This represents a B-. Again, not bad considering we only led after the siren.
[6] I am thinking we should have a rating system for the Umpires. We managed frees at the end that the Freo people wouldn’t be happy with (they were clearly there, but that is another story), while the Umps basically gave Freo 2 of their first quarter goals. To be honest, the Umpiring wasn’t as bad as it has been of recent times, but for those two shockers in the first quarter.
[7] Ed Curnow managed his 1st BOG for the season, followed closely by Sam Walsh (his 1st second place) and Patrick Cripps (his 4th top-3 performance).
[8] Again, a mention to the Carlton supporters in Perth should be made. They did us proud.

Round 13: Carlton vs Gold Coast in Darwin
Probably the 2nd most dominant game we’ve had for the year, only hurt by our poor kicking for goal. It was very satisfying to watch us win on a Friday Night on free-to-air TV!
Trends:
[1] This week 16 people voted, down from 17 last week and 17 for the corresponding game last year. Still, a solid voter turnout.
[2] There were less than 60 votes different comparing this week to last week. Was this our response to our poor kicking for goal?
[3] 16 players managed to get a mention this week, which is an excellent effort and a mark of how dominant we were around the field.
[4] We had 5 players get 100 votes or better, led by Marc Murphy with 270. It goes to show that instead of having 1 or 2 dominant players, we spread the load around. Overall, this is a positive thing, but I would like to see a few more outstanding performances.
[5] The rating this week was 9.21, which corresponds almost to a B+ and our 3rd highest rating for the year.
[6] This was Marc Murphy’s first dominant game for the season and his first BOG. 2nd place getter, Jacob Weitering, had his 6th score in the top 3.

Notice the Roar website did its best "P" surname team this week and Jim Park was the only Carlton player to get a spot in the team (on the bench). Val Perovic might be a bit unlucky but beyond that the cupboard is a little bare. Brad Pearce shone bright only briefly, Phil Pinnell was a soldier with a 200 game career (including Melbourne). Any others to note?

Rd 14: Carlton vs Collingwood
Such a disappointing game. We were in it for so long, but never seemed to do enough.
Trends:
[1] Only 12 voters for this game, compared to the 17 for this round last year and 16 for last week’s game. On of the issues of having a ‘condensed period’ is that it is harder to garner interest in voting.
The again, losing doesn’t help either.
[2] With the lower rating and the lower number of people voting, the total votes received was down as well by 240 votes. That is a significant drop, but not the sort of thing we saw a few years back when we were being pounded regularly.
[3] 13 players deserved a vote this week, down from the 16 of last week. This continues the trend of having a larger contribution from more players, rather than single dominant performances. Mind you, I wouldn’t mind seeing a Judd-like or fit-Cripps-like performance. We some Brownlow votes.
[4] We managed to have 5 players get 100 or more votes this week. That is solid.
[5] The rating this week for 7.61, which represents just under a C-. Not too bad in the circumstances, but disappointing when we really needed a good performance to get us to the finals.
[6] Sam Walsh managed his 2nd BOG for the year. In the last seven games he has managed 6 top 5 finishes. And there are idiots out there who think we made a mistake getting him! Morons! (Kane Cornes, I’m looking at you!)
[7] Ed Curnow and Jacob Weitering continued their very consistent seasons with solid voting displays.

2020 Rd 15: Carlton vs GWS
This is the game where we threw away our finals’ opportunity. Nichevo. We will be better.
Trends:
[1] This week only 11 people voted, something of a disappointment. This is less than the 14 for the same game last year and the 12 from the previous game. But considering the general disappointment with the result, I can understand the lack of will. It is much harder to care after such a disappointing loss.
[2] The number of votes is similar to last week’s game against Collingwood. That is to be expected, although we played better for longer against GWS.
[3] 12 players managed a mention this week. This is one down from last week, but still a considerable improvement over our efforts in recent years. At our nadir, we struggled to get 10 players worth a mention. It goes to show that we are a more even team in this particular iteration. That bodes well for the future.
[4] Only 3 players garnered more than 100 votes this week, with 2 dominant performances. This has not been our norm this year.
[5] The rating this was 7.70, just a little higher than last week. This represents a C-. We have only had 2 ratings this year considerably less than this, which also shows that we are in games for longer periods. A promising sign for 2021.
[6] Jacob Weitering continued his great form this year with a 3rd BOG. He has been the model of consistency this season. Similarly, Sam Walsh and Ed Curnow, who were 2nd and 3rd respectively. Walsh’s form of late has been brilliant. Ed continues on his most consistent of seasons.
[7] Patrick Cripps continues to show his relatively ordinary form. He has not had a BOG since Round 1 and has only 7 top 5 finishes. If we needed any evidence that he has been down this season … I think Crippa will be back to his best next year, with normal rounds of normal length and him being 100% fit and not having to worry about not supporting his girlfriend.

At this point Jacob Weitering has probably a large enough lead to win this year's Award. It isn't impossible to catch him, but he is playing very consistently.
Sam Walsh has come up to take 2nd spot from Ed Curnow.
From 2nd to 6th is still close.

2020 Rd 16: Carlton vs Sydney
A win, and it could be our last for the year. We were hopeless early, but brilliant after about halfway through the 2nd term.
Trends:
[1] 17 people voted for this game, a very good turnout. The trend this year is about 17 voters for a win and about 12 for a loss. It has been a lot more consistent this year. This time last year there were 16 voters, while there were 11 last week. I think the previous round really hurt.
[2] The total number of votes is up comfortably this week, but not as much as would normally expected. Our expectations have changed somewhat. Hopefully our expectations can remain high, because the performances reflect it.
[3] A remarkable 19 players managed a mention this week! I cannot remember a spread of votes quite like it, although we have had a couple of performances similar at times this year. For all that can be said about Carlton players this season, we have been a relatively even side. Pity we haven’t had a full list once all year! It also suggests that we haven't been a 4 quarter side very often either.
[4] 5 players managed 100 or more votes, which is also becoming a common occurrence. 2 of those managed more than 200 votes.
[5] The rating, 8.53, is somewhat down for a win in recent times. It appears we do expect to win sometimes now. Wish it was every week! 8.53 represents between a C+ and B-.
[6] Sam Walsh managed his 4th BOG for the season. Kane Cornes, have you noticed yet? (What an idiot!) Since Rd 7 (his first BOG for the year), there has been only 1 game where he has been in our top 5 players.
[7] Jacob Weitering continues to show his excellent form this year with yet another top 10 finish. There have only been 2 games where he was not in the top 10. He has 9 performances in the top 5.

It has become a race in two, with 2 rounds to go. Walsh is the only one who may catch Weitering. If we lose, Weitering is likely to get votes: he has only been beaten once this year.

AFL 2020 Rd 17: Carlton vs Adelaide
This was our most disappointing loss for the year, losing to the wooden spooners. Unfortunately, they turned up and we didn’t.
Trends:
[1] The voters thought this was our worst game for the year. I’m not so sure it was, but the weighting, 5.38, was the worst by some margin. That represents an F+. We have panned no other game like this one.
[2] 13 people voted this week, a slight improvement on our recent losses. It is down from 17 last week and 16 from the corresponding game last year. Some people wanted to vent, and fair enough too.
[3] With such a rating, it is no surprise that the total number of votes this week is more than 100 fewer than our previous worst. Dissatisfaction is dissatisfaction.
[4] 13 players managed a mention this week, which is still decent. Alas, not many garnered the votes they required to substantially alter the Progressive Voting.
[5] Only 3 players managed more than 100 votes, also well down on our norm. And of those, there was no outstanding, Judd-like score.
[6] Jacob Weitering managed his 4th BOG for the season. He has had a brilliant year. H managed his first 2nd spot for the season, followed by Sam Walsh, who had another strong performance. It is no surprise that Walsh and Weitering are where they are on the Voting lists.

It is rare for him not to get some votes, even though his top 4 finishes have been few.
The problem with the players directly beneath is inconsistency (Martin) or that, like Cripps, they usually gather small numbers of votes (Jones and Docherty). We have a very even central bunch, but few of them have standout games.
