Re: Jumper Numbers - cookie2 - 12-14-2017 I remember seeing Russell play for us against Port one night at Etihad quite a few years ago now and early in his career. He was magnificent, probably the best game he ever played. Seemed to be the whipping boy for a long time and was blamed for everything including the troubles in the middle east. The Club should have held onto him IMO, he was extremely upset when they let him go, loved the club and his team mates. A nicer more polite bloke you will not meet. Had confidence issues standing his ground or putting himself in the contest, his disposal was also poor under pressure and turned the ball over too much IMO... It also helps if techniques are given to players to help them avoid this tactic by their managers. Most managers play their players to their strengths, and eliminate their weaknesses not by just working on them until they are no longer weaknesses, but so that they shelve that part of their game until they absolutely have to do it. Think kicking on the "wrong" side of your body. If you are an average left foot kick at best, but call on it sparingly knowing that you can get the footy where you need to on the opposite side, 1 in 5 lets say, then only doing it once, means that the weakness isnt highlighted because you do it sparingly and in situations when its the best option. The other side of that, is that the strengths are highlighted so frequently that the weakness vanishes. Russell was prone to ten minutes of disaster footy which would cost games and that to me is a coaching issue not a player issue. The one thing I will say in his favour was that he didnt try and hide the problem and was happy to admit he needed to get better in that area....good clubman and happy to talk to the fans was JR... |
